MEDICAL TOURISM RECOVERY RETREATS IN LATIN AMERICA

As the medical tourism industry grows in Latin America, so do other areas associated with medical tourism. Recovery retreats are an area that is being discovered by people who see the future growth of the industry and understand how to capitalize on it.

Many doctors and hospitals in Costa Rica, Brazil, Mexico, Panama and Argentina have set up “medical retreats” where their patients can recuperate at leisure with 24 hour care. Usually, the retreat is located in close proximity to the doctors’ practice or the hospital. Sometimes, the retreat is located in an apartment complex. Costa Rica is one country that has identified the need and now has over fifteen retreats in San Jose, with new ones popping up regularly. Most have 24 hour nurses and four to eighteen individual rooms offering patients privacy as well as companionship. Meals are included in most instances and there are common areas where you can enjoy mixing with others that are experiencing a recuperation period. It’s the perfect atmosphere for relaxing and recharging.

Medical Retreats might not be for everyone. Meal selection and entertainment are limited and there could be charges for extra services. Accommodation might be great for a patient, but not so great for a spouse or a travel companion. Don’t plan on staying at a medical retreat for your whole medical tourism stay. Once your recovery period is over, it’s nice to change venue for the rest of your stay, perhaps at the beach or in the mountains.

Check with your doctor as to where and how long you should stay. They provide these services on a daily basis and will have the experience to guide you in your selection.
